SF Glean

SF Glean is a project with many functions:

  • Feeding the hungry
  • Data gathering on tree performance
  • Community Building
  • Sustainability through the promotion of Hyper-Local foods
Many trees go unharvested, therefore it is understandable why it is hard to get a permit to plant more fruit trees in public places. When we are responsible for the trees we DO have, we can then ask for more trees that have a harvest.

SF Glean uses a database of trees and grassroots-style community organizing to get the harvest done.

The tool is a really neat idea (we think)!  In essence, it is a google map with movable markers that pinpoint trees. In the SF Glean database, these trees have calendars associated with them. Then, using calendar and data field criteria, we are able to generate and send out email to glean teams, making it easy to remember when a tree needs to be harvested.  Want to learn more?
